Investigators from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (USA) (CPW, for its acronym in English) said Tuesday that a man attacked by a cougar in the north of the state survived by suffocating the animal to death, a circumstance considered "very rare". ".

The man has injuries to his head, neck, face, forearms and wrists, as well as "serious injuries" and cuts to his legs and back.

Despite this situation, he arrived on his own at a hospital in the area.

According to authorities, the events occurred yesterday near a reservoir, in the area known as Horseshoe Mountain, west of the city of Fort Collins, in Larimer County, while the man jogged through the area.

The injuries of this person, whose identity has not been released, reveal that the cougar attacked him from behind, catching him at neck height.

The man confronted the animal - also known as a mountain lion - and, according to CPW, a state government agency, allegedly hanged it.

Through a series of messages posted on Twitter, the CPW investigators indicated that they had been able to confirm "the victim's account that he was able to suffocate the animal while defending himself from the attack."

However, it is still not clear what caused the action of the cougar, a young specimen, since the occasions of attacks by these felines on humans are few.

It is speculated that the man's trot could be the triggering factor, or that the cougar was sick.

Either way, some action by the man "triggered the instinct" of the feline, according to CPW.

It is unknown how the attacked man, who lacked any type of defense weapon, managed to suffocate the animal. His hands were wounded and bleeding.

Speaking to local media, Rebecca Ferrell, a CPW spokeswoman, stated that "we are all confused and impressed." She, too, the official said that killing a cougar barehanded "is very rare."

Once the man recovers sufficiently, likely as soon as this afternoon, investigators will have "a number of questions for him," Ferrell said.

The details of the autopsy of the puma, as well as those of the wounds of the attacked man, will not be released during the course of the investigations.

Since 1990, three people have been killed and 16 injured by mountain lion attacks in Colorado, according to CPW.

On his Facebook account, local Governor Jared Polis today urged residents not to purposely try to repeat what the Northern Colorado man did because "it will probably end badly for you."

Last month, CPW officers trapped and killed five mountain lions in the western part of the state, saying that was "the only option" they had after they were spotted prowling near the town of Glenwood Springs.
