Nearly two years since the Covid pandemic began, Apple is finally allowing iPhone users to unlock their iPhone with Face ID when wearing a face mask.
Face ID, Apple's facial recognition system, has reportedly received its biggest update as part of iOS 15.4, which is now in beta testing.
Florida-based iOS user Brandon Butch, an early tester, has posted screenshots of the new feature on Twitter.
It appears that iPhone users have the option to turn the tool on and off, though Apple says Face ID is more effective when you can see your entire face.
Since the start of the pandemic, getting Face ID to automatically recognize our faces to unlock our iPhones has been a nightmare, as we've had masks over our faces. With iOS 15.4, that seems to have finally been remedied.
This feature will work for iPhone 12 and later when they have iOS 15.4 installed.
Apple's new software update, iOS 15.4, is being tracked in a beta test released Thursday, ahead of its full rollout in the spring.
Go to: Settings > Face ID > Use Face ID with a mask
"Face ID is most accurate when it's set to only full face recognition," Apple's new feature tells the user, according to screenshots.
"To use Face ID while wearing a mask, iPhone can recognize unique features around the eye area to authenticate."
iPhone users have the option to tap 'Use Face ID with a mask' or 'Don't use Face ID with a mask'.
According to Butch, users first need to go to their iPhone settings and tap 'Face ID,' followed by 'Use Face ID with a mask' to toggle the option on and off.
In addition, the new feature will only work on iPhone 12 and later, according to 9to5Mac, which means users stuck with an iPhone 11 or older will still need to remove the mask for Face ID to work.
Apple had introduced some features in recent software updates that were designed to allow users to access their phones more easily.
Last April, Apple released the iOS 14.5 software update with a feature that allows users who wear skins to open their iPhone with an Apple Watch.
In Settings, Apple says: 'Face ID is most accurate when set to full face recognition only'
It looks like iPhone users will have to go to their device's settings to turn the option on and off.
Early in the pandemic, iOS 13.5 (released in May 2020) sent iPhone users directly to their passcode when Face ID detected they were wearing a mask.
Prior to this, Face ID had repeatedly failed to display manual passcode entry due to its inability to recognize a user's face when half hidden.
Apple's new software update, iOS 15.4, is being tracked in a beta test released Thursday, ahead of its full rollout in spring 2022.
Beta testing involves allowing a small group of people to use a product to discover any bugs or problems before a general release.
Apple's new feature will only work on iPhone 12 (pictured) and newer, according to 9to5Mac
Apple has yet to reveal a full release date for iOS 15.4, but it's likely to be in March or April after at least a month of beta testing during February.
Other updates coming with iOS 15.4 include the option to unlock your iPhone while wearing a mask, immunization records in the Health app, and an Apple Card widget in Today view.
Also included in iOS 15.4 are 37 new emojis, including 'pregnant man,' lip biting, disco ball, troll with a club, and low battery, as well as new emoticons and hand gestures.
From a pregnant man to a biting lip, all 37 new emojis have finally been revealed that They will come to the iPhone.
Apple's own designs for the new emoji are already available in a beta test of the iOS 15.4 software update released Thursday, ahead of its full rollout in the spring.
The Unicode Consortium officially approved the candidates for the next emoji release, version 14.0, in September 2021.
But companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft apply stylized versions of the consortium's designs to their own operating systems. Here are the ones from Apple:
