The Provincial Ministry of Health has a button on its website www.ms.gba.gov.ar called: "Abortion - Sexual and Reproductive Health" that has specific information on this practice. There is published the first map of the network of public health establishments in Buenos Aires where you can access a voluntary and legal termination of pregnancy, as provided by Law No. 27,610. These actions were disseminated within the framework of the "Global Day of Action for Abortion" commemorated yesterday, September 28.

The map has more than 400 public health establishments, including first level care centers and Buenos Aires hospitals. During the first year of this management, the number of effectors could be doubled, which meant a strong reduction in territorial inequities.

In this sense, the Provincial Director of Gender Equity in Health, Sabrina Balaña, explained that "since the beginning of our administration, we have achieved that 120 of the 135 municipalities of the Province have health providers that perform pregnancy interruptions and provide free misoprostol to users to guarantee the right. We have the challenge of continuing to expand the offer of rights-guarantor services”

According to the data collected, in December 2019 only 36% of the municipal territory guaranteed the practice and in June 2021 85% of the Province's territory was reached with the presence of effectors who carry it out. "Our objectives are that all municipalities have effectors that guarantee access and work to reduce inequities within them," said Balaña.

The map is available on the official website of the Ministry, where in addition to finding the closest health center or hospital to each address, as well as other necessary information to clear up doubts, with a step-by-step on what to do in case of suspicion of being pregnant, frequently asked questions, along with information for health teams and contacts.

Regarding the communication campaign on abortion carried out by the Buenos Aires health portfolio, the Director of Sexual and Reproductive Health of the Province, Carlota Ramírez, stated that “guaranteeing information on abortion is to finish taking it out of hiding, since finding information on the web is making the practice visible, and this is the product of a political will that prioritized and continues to prioritize access to safe abortion as a care policy.”

“All the information that is built, the product of collective work and the integration of various areas of the Ministry, is made available to the population so that women and people with the capacity to gestate can have sovereignty over their bodies. This is an important step in the comprehensive strategy to guarantee access to the interruption of pregnancy throughout the Province”.

STATISTICS ON ABORTIONS

It is estimated that in Argentina there are between 6 and 7 abortions every 10 births. If the reasons why women of childbearing age are discharged from a hospital are analyzed, it is observed that abortion is the second cause of discharge, the first being childbirth and its complications. In the Province of Buenos Aires, 15,000 annual discharges for this reason have been registered in the last available years.

The right to Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy (IVE) contributes to reducing inequities in health, gender and socioeconomics, since it improves access to health for all women and people with the capacity to gestate. In addition, it reduces inequalities in access to the health system because the IVE consultation constitutes an opportunity to monitor other situations of vulnerability such as the lack of access to contraceptive methods and situations of violence that are often invisible.
