HOUSTON, Texas.- The 'Salud en Mis Manos' program is supervised by the UTHealth system, which in turn is sponsored by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). Its purpose is to prevent complications caused by cervical and breast cancer.
“Breast cancer is the cancer that affects Latinas the most,” said Emily Adlparvar, coordinator of ‘Salud en Mis Manos. This specialist indicates that women are going to medical centers when they already have symptoms, something that she considers a problem because it is not being prevented.
The program is focused on low-income women over 18 years of age who lack health insurance. The service is offered at dozens of clinics in 31 Texas counties.
If any abnormalities are detected, patients are referred to hospitals for treatment.
Experts recommend women not to refrain from being examined despite the pandemic times in which we live. “Don't let that stop you, at least make an appointment,” Adlparvar said, adding that despite the closure of some clinics in the past few months, they are making appointments for a month and others for up to four months.
