In an attempt to stop the transmission of the contagious omicron variant of the coronavirus in the country, against which cloth masks do not provide sufficient protection, the Biden government announced that they will distribute 400 million N95 respirators to the population for free.
It is the "largest deployment of personal protective equipment in the history of the United States" and a measure that will expand access to this important tool to stop infections, which although they are no longer scarce as at the beginning of the pandemic when not even there were enough for medical personnel, its price has continued to limit its use in the US.
“I know we all wish we could finally stop wearing masks. I understand. But they are a very important tool in stopping the spread of the virus, especially the highly transmissible omicron variant. So please, please wear the mask,” President Joe Biden said during the announcement.
The move was announced the same week the government began sending free screening tests to homes and just after it also ordered insurers to cover their cost.
The N95 respirators come from the Strategic National Stockpile which currently has 750 million of them and there is already a plan to replenish the supply of this large batch that will be delivered.
Why is it better to use this type of masks? How to get them for free? How many can you receive? We explain what is known for now.
