The Google Impact Challenge for Women and Girls selected the organization Include Me to help 600 women with disabilities find jobs related to science and technology.

This, given that women tend to have an underrepresentation in the STEM area (science, technology, engineering and mathematics); less than a third works in research and scientific development, which is even more complicated when it comes to a person with some type of disability.

According to UNESCO data, only 17.5 percent of the technology workforce are women, and of these, 5 percent hold leadership and decision-making positions. Also, 30 percent of female students choose STEM careers.

These figures contrast with those of the Addeco Foundation and the World Health Organization (WHO), who report that of all women with disabilities, only 24.2 percent have formal or established employment, while 75 percent of working age are are completely unemployed.

Clara Popeo, Regional Project Manager of Inclúyeme, assures that there are currently few responsible actions that direct their strategies towards the inclusion of women with disabilities in the scientific and technological sector, which is why the support of a giant in the area such as Google is what it is to be able to generate impact and break the gender gap that still plagues this vulnerable sector around the world.

Technological and gender inclusion

The project is promoted this 2022 in Latin America with a series of trainings in nine countries, including Mexico. The skills will be of a technological nature that open up opportunities for placement in companies dedicated to the digital environment and that offer freelance or home office work platforms.

Likewise, work is being done on a tool that helps to identify the biases that hinder the employability of this sector of the population. The project will be reinforced from time to time with the support of a panel of experts led by women, which includes characters like Shakira.

Benefits of hiring people with disabilities

  1. Companies achieve a 35 percent greater probability of having above-average financial returns.
  2. Having inclusion projects helps reduce staff turnover and hiring costs.
  3. 86 percent of people with disabilities rated better on attendance than their peers without disabilities.
  4. 90 percent of the sector performs better than people without disabilities.
  5. According to the US Job Accommodation Network, 58 percent of workplace accommodations for people with disabilities are free of charge.
