According to a study in 44 Spanish public hospitals, women treated by midwives in childbirth have twice the chances of having a normal delivery, without forceps or caesarean section, and up to 50% less possibilities of suffering a tear in the severe perineumand/or that they perform an episiotomy.
The objective of the study, in which 11 have participated.537 women, it has been to evaluate the attention received by midwives and gynecologists and the results of mothers and babies in women with normal pregnancies, of low and medium risk in Spain in the years 2016 to 2019.
The study excluded women with pregnancies classified as high or very high risk pregnancies,
According to the study, the cesarean session for women in the registered care group was 10.4%, while the rate of caesarean sections of women treated by gynecologists was 33.2%.The national percentage of caesarean sections is 22.2%.
The results of the study have been published in the magazine ‘International Journal of Nursing Studies’ show that the attention headed by midwives is associated with a lower number of obstetric interventions and greater satisfaction of women with their experience of childbirth.
Therefore, the authors of the study consider that a change in the current maternity care system should be promoted to achieve greater integration of the services headed by midwives in low -risk pregnancies and thus achieve optimal health results for women and the babies
The authors of the study think that good results can be explained by the characteristics of the care offered by midwives, since their training and their compliances focus on pregnancy and normal birth as health processes
