"I can't be a lifetime like that," explains the young Sevillian, who, apart from drugs, is not receiving therapeutic treatment from any specialist, and who considers that with him he has acted by the "easy way".

They are increasing.A fact that alerts psychologists, who warn that "if some of the paintings presented by adolescents soon, medicines would not be necessary, but could be overcome only with psychotherapy".

In Spain there are six clinical psychologists per 100.000 thousand inhabitants compared to the 18th in the European Union, and 9.6 psychiatrists per 100.000;figures that, according to health professionals, are not enough to meet the demand for patients.

The latest data collected by the CIS reflects that more than half of the people (58.7 %) diagnosed with mental pathologies such as anxiety or depression, they were prescribed anxiolytic and 41.3 % antidepressants.

Anxiolytics for young people: "I can't be like this all my life"

The psychiatrist and director of the therapeutic school of the Almagama Association, Adela Masana, says that between 40 and 60% of young people who ask for help from their doctor leave the consultation with a psychotropic recipe.

Given this situation, the psychologist and member of the Governing Board of the Official College of Psychologists of Madrid Mercedes Bermejo houses little hope that there will be a change and explains, with resignation, that "psychologists are not going to face the pharmaceutical companies knowingall the power and power they can have to question this ".

Side effects, an "endless" list

The psychiatrist of the Madrid and Cajal Madrid Hospital, Enriqueta Ochoa (addiction specialist), explains that the side effects that anxiolytic or antidepressants have "are endless", although they emphasize that the impact varies according to the person and the prescription dose.

During the first months of treatment, Sevillian José Manuel confesses to having felt "more dependence on drugs" with several side effects, which, over time, became belly pains that tries to calm with stomach protector.

Both psychologists and psychiatrists agree that, in addition, alterations in humor or sexual relations can occur and, in many cases, create dependence.

In this sense, Enriqueta Bermejo emphasizes that some patients tend to generate a feeling of not being able to fight the disease for themselves, which causes them the need for drug consumption. There are cases in which they develop a “abstinence syndrome” when leaving the treatment, the expert underlines.

And it warns that "a teenager's brain is continuously changing and does not stop developing up to 20 or 24 years", so it is unknown exactly what adverse effects that of neurochemical substances can have on him or if they can leave sequelae.

A specific law, the third leg of treatment

Last September, Congress took a step forward to improve mental health care with the proposal of Unidos Podemos to approve a mental health law that raises an increase in the number of psychologists and psychiatrists in public health.

The Lower House will process this proposal while the government finalizes its National Mental Health Strategy (planned for the end of the year), according to the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias.

The law of purple formation proposes to end the historical deficit of specialists and reach in four years the European average, so that there are a minimum of 18 psychiatrists, 18 clinical psychologists and 23 specialist nurses per 100.000 inhabitants.

This initiative responds to a growing concern for mental health especially in the youngest, which since the pandemic began, have been specially affected with a 250% increase in suicidal ideas and self -injuries.

Something that the young Sevillian recognizes, when verifying in his environment that people of his age suffer a lot of stress and anxiety and, after pandemic, these disorders are more frequent: "This has left us very touched".
