Gender violence in Paraguay
Worldwide 1 in 3 women is a victim of violence and 38% of all murders of women globally were committed by their partners. In the region of the Americas, 29.8% of women have suffered couple violence.
According to estimates by PAHO in 2018, in Paraguay, 20.4 % of women aged 15 to 49 and 8.9 % women aged 15 to 49 reported physical or sexual violence by their partner.
The health consequences of women exposed to couple violence are frequent and cover different areas. For example, the probability of depression is twice.
The probability of suffering from alcohol consumption is almost twice. The probability of having a baby with low birth weight is 16% higher. The probability of contracting HIV infection, syphilis, chlamydiasis or gonorrhea is 1.5 times higher.
42% of women who have suffered physical or sexual violence as a couple have had trauma as a result of this.
To deal with this problem, in 2016, Paraguay approved his law for integral protection to women against all forms of violence through which clear functions are assigned to the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare such as for example, thedesign and apply specific protocols;Organize the application of a record linked to the Single Registration System;provide enough budget for the National Program for the Prevention and Attention of Violence, among others.
