The Nursing College of Alicante wants to alert the shortage of nurses specialists in Obstetrics and Gynecology and warns that the lack of these professionals in the National Health System puts a good quality of the reproductive life of women at risk.

This has been revealed in the course of the meeting held between the vowels of the specialty in the Plenary of the General Nursing Council, Montserrat Angulo (also president of the College of Nursing of Alicante) and Marisol Montenegro, with the rest of the provincial vocalsOnline.

Montserrat Angulo recalled that they accompany women throughout the reproductive process and not only in childbirth and puerperium functions.Administrations must know this situation and should not make deaf ears to the lack of professionals. This scarcity scenario "can relegate us to work exclusively in the paritor, which many times seems to be the only place that is our competition.Nothing is further from reality, we have regulated all the functions for many years to help and accompany the woman "

The president of the Nursing College of Alicante has specified that in primary care "we have a very large range of attention to the sex and reproductive life of women, which includes adolescence, contraception, pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum, menopause... without having other scenarios where the midwife is the best trained professional to work on them.In short, it is essential to put on the table the number of midwives current.".

During the meeting it was agreed to make a report to send to the Ministries of Health and Universities to know the situation and increase the figure of training places in the upcoming calls.“There are studies that say that women are much more satisfied, the attention is more efficient and better health results are obtained when they are treated by a midwife as far as their reproductive health is concerned. Tenemos un plus de formación que las mujeres demandan y deben conocerlo también las unidades docentes a la hora de decidir cuántas plazas piden a sus comunidades autónomas para que en próximas convocatorias saquen las máximas posibles", especifica Angulo.

Retirements

This shortage is one of the main problems facing the profession in the short term because a high retirement rate is estimated in the coming years. In addition to the lack of professionals, midwives also discussed the need to address the prescription in this area.

On the same day, a meeting was also held with the president of the Spanish Association of Motrona (AEM), Rosa Plata, and the vice president of the Federation of Midron Associations of Spain (FAME), Daniel Morillas, to learn about her closework and point possible lines of joint work.
