All of us, to a greater or lesser extent, have ever given us to innovate with cosmetics. But there are risks because here, if you let us, you shouldn't play cosmetologist if you don't really know what you're doing. And although there are some home remedies and ingredients that are effective for many problems, in the case of facial masks, the protagonists of our article, you should not risk it.
During confinement, the fashion for homemade face masks was a boom. Whether it was for savings or not being able to leave home to buy it, many turned to masks and according to experts, it could be a big mistake when treating the skin for various reasons. We hope there will be no more lockdowns. Although the fashion of cosmetics at home, it seems that it has not decreased. And here's what you should know about making your own face mask in the kitchen.
This is warned by Bella Hurtado, director of education at Aromatherapy Associates, who assures that “fruits and vegetables tend to oxidize easily. We see it with an apple if we leave it exposed to the air for a few minutes. Thus ingredients that may be antioxidants may become pro-oxidants,” she explains. We are talking, for example, about the refreshing cucumber, the aforementioned detoxifying green apple… No, all that glitters is not gold. This is precisely what cosmetic firms take into account to avoid the oxidation processes that could give rise to our skin if it is not adjusted with treated active ingredients or reformulated or synthesized extracts, in laboratories.

Famous for its depigmenting benefits and for being an important source of vitamin C. But what many do not take into account is that this vitamin C is also irritating and can even become pigmenting. And explains Raquel González, director of education at Perricone MD.

“Cosmetic firms work with formulations in which vitamin C is stabilized. For this reason, ascorbic acid as such is not usually worked with, but with stable forms such as tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate or ethylated ascorbic acid. If we apply, for example, lemon juice to a mask, we will surely irritate the skin and generate spots in the long term because it is not a stable principle and will vary depending on the light, the air, etc., producing the opposite effect -pro-oxidative- to the desired one”.
DRIn homemade masks, we do not have sufficient means to carry it out correctly. And it is just as important as the assets are the means of conveying the principle. This means that when a cosmetic is applied to the skin, its effectiveness varies depending on the encapsulation system in which it is inserted. Elisabeth San Gregorio, Medik8 technical director, argues: “The active ingredients are not usually released on the skin just like that. A good formulation requires that the principle be encapsulated (usually in polymers) that directs the principle and takes it to the skin or to the cells.”
Although they are very famous, they can carry great risks. They perform a mechanical exfoliation but according to Valeria Navarro, technical director of Boutjour, “it is necessary to use physical exfoliants that have been perfectly spherified (bamboo or apricot seeds, for example), and this is usually done in a laboratory. The use of sugars or salts can damage the skin, since they have edges that can create micro dermo abrasions or wounds”.
DRTo get the most out of your best mask, always follow this mantra of use.
First, clean the skin well and dry thoroughly, then apply the mask (either in creamy or gelatinous format or in tissue format), always avoiding the eye and lip area. Leave on for a minimum of 10 to 15 minutes and when removing, massage the skin. Here you can help yourself with a good facial or jade roller to activate the blood circulation of the face. Then remove with lukewarm water, rinsing the skin completely.
Depending on the mask and your needs, you can use up to 2 times a week for good results.
So with all this information on the table… kitchen ear! The lemons, for the cake.
