It is common to feel some apprehension when entering a gym for the first time, or when practicing a new form of sport or exercise. It's even easy to think you're too old to learn a new skill or discipline. But Barbara Rawlings alias "Corki" is proof that this is not the case. At 86, she just celebrated her first full year as a regular at The Strength Co. gym, where she lifts weights three times a week. Will he follow in the footsteps of Frank Zane, the 79-year-old bodybuilding legend who continues to train?

The Strength Co. owner Grant Broggi, a family friend, suggested Corki visit his gym after taking a fall. He thought that if she was able to work on strength development, she would help him stay healthier and injury-free in the future."When I first came here, I was intimidated," says Corki. "It wasn't scary, it was just a challenge. I had never done anything like it. The only exercise I did was walk."

However, he soon rose to the challenge and now trains with Broggi on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8:30. "I've loved it, every minute of it," she says. "He's been on it and on it, and now he's lifting over 100 pounds," says Broggi. "He crushes it." He explains that when they first started working out together, Corki would focus on learning and perfecting one movement per workout, starting with very light weights, then building it up as she began to progress over time.

"I would definitely recommend weightlifting to anyone my age, younger, older, anyone, but especially older," says Corki. "It gives you confidence, it gives you the strength to do your daily tasks, it's a very positive thing and I love it. I recommend it to anyone."
