Health editors spoke with Cynthia HENG, MSN, ARN, practicing nurse with Baptist Health Urgent Care Express about some of the conditions that she sees more often, and how the pandemic has changed the way patients seek care of attention from Health.
Health: First, tell us a little about you.How long have you been working in the field of health care? What do you enjoy more about your work?
HENG: I have been a recorded nurse for 12 years and practicing nurse for six years and I work at Baptist Health Urgent Care Express.I like to interact with patients and learn from the patients who come to see us, and I am very satisfied to know that I am making a difference - it doesn't matter how small it is in their health and in their lives.
Health: What are some of the most common conditions that make women seek attention at Baptist Health Urgent Care Express?
HENG: Some of the conditions that we see most frequently are women presenting with urinary tract infections, candid infections and sexually transmitted infections, as well as kidney calculations, back pain and adverse effects of prescription medications, to name a few.Of course, we deal with many other conditions in Urgent Care Express, and that is why we are here, but these are some of the things that drive women to seek attention with us.
Health: What happens if your condition requires more advanced attention?

HENG: In Baptist Health Urgent Care Express, we are trained to recognize the signals or symptoms that something more serious can be happening.Last year, for example, I treated a school -age girl who complained about abdominal pain.As it was a girl, I considered the possible diagnoses - appendicitis, ovarian etiology or cholecystitis - and referred to the girl's mother to the emergency room of the hospital for a deeper evaluation of her daughter.Later I learned that the girl had an ovarian torsion, which required emergency surgery and a very close tracking since then. Not having detected this acute problem, he could have affected his ability to have children later in his life.
Once we diagnose a patient, if it is appropriate to treat them here, we will do it.If more specialized attention is needed, we ensure that appropriate care and monitoring are programmed before the patient leaves. After being seen here, patients should always receive monitoring care with their primary care doctor in case they require more monitoring.
Health: How has you affected you and your work this past year?
HENG: COVID-19 has dramatically changed the way in which health care is administered.Telesalud platforms such as the Baptist Health Care On Demand app have become very popular during the pandemic and are a great convenience for patients and doctors equally.
When I started working here last year, 98 percent of our Urgent Care Express visits were through Telesalud. It seems that some sense of normality has made in recent months, however, and patients do not have so many concerns to come to Urgent Care Express to seek attention for problems not related to COVID.But due to its convenience, the TELESALUD is definitely here to stay.
Health: How do you think that COVID-19 has affected patients?
HENG: I think that one of the greatest impacts we have seen with the COVID-19 in the past year is that people have been overlooking the emergency care and even routine checkups, preferring to avoid hospitals, clinicsand medical offices during pandemic. We care about what is not being diagnosed or what could have been easier to treat if it had been detected earlier.
