Selection Process
- Tier I — Objective Test.
- Tier II — Descriptive Test.
- Tier III — Practical Skills Test (qualifying).
The selection process begins with screening by an Institutional Screening Committee, which checks every application against the minimum qualifications. Applications that do not meet the minimum qualifications are rejected without further correspondence, and meeting the requirements does not on its own guarantee a place in the selection process. Shortlisted candidates take a three-tier examination, held only in Thiruvananthapuram. Candidates are shortlisted for Tier III based on their combined Tier I and Tier II score, out of a maximum of 300 marks. The designated authority decides the cut-off for Tier III. The list for Tier III is published on the RGCB website and on the notice board at the Main Campus, and no individual messages are sent at that stage. Tier III is a qualifying Pass or Fail practical test based on the job description. If a candidate has applied for more than one post, a separate skills test must be taken for each post. The final merit list ranks candidates who passed Tier III by their total Tier I and Tier II score. Results are published on the institute’s website, and successful candidates are informed by e-mail. At every tier, candidates must bring the RGCB Admit Card and one valid Government of India identity card: Aadhaar Card, Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID or Driving Licence. If a candidate cannot show both, they will be disqualified on the spot.
Exam Pattern
Tier I — Objective Test: 100 questions, 2 marks for each correct answer, minus 0.50 for each wrong answer, 90 minutes, subjects General Intelligence, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, English Language.
Tier II — Descriptive Test: pen and paper, 100 marks, 10 questions, answer any 5 (only the first 5 attempted are marked), 90 minutes, syllabus academic subjects and the topics in the job description of the post.
Tier III — Practical Skills Test: qualifying Pass or Fail, based on the job description of the post. There is no separate mark weightage for Tier III in the final merit list, which is based on the Tier I and Tier II total.
