Age Calculator for Government Jobs: Check Your Eligibility by Date of Birth

Planning to apply for a Sarkari Naukri? Your age is one of the first things recruiters check. Almost every government job notification in India — from SSC and UPSC to RRB, IBPS and state public service commissions — sets a minimum and maximum age limit, and applications outside that range are rejected outright. This free age calculator for government jobs works out your exact age in years, months and days from your date of birth, so you can quickly check whether you fall within the age limit of the exam you are targeting.

How government job age limits work in India

Government job age limits are always counted as on a cut-off date given in the official notification — not the date you apply or the exam date. For example, a notification may require candidates to be between 18 and 27 years of age as on 1 August 2026. The minimum age is usually 18 years for Group C posts such as constables and clerks, and 21 years for officer-level exams such as the UPSC Civil Services. The maximum age for general category candidates is commonly 27 to 32 years, depending on the post. Even a single day over the upper limit makes you ineligible, so always calculate your age carefully against the notification's cut-off date before applying.

Age relaxation for OBC, SC, ST and other categories

Candidates from reserved categories get relaxation in the upper age limit under central government rules. OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates usually get 3 years of relaxation, while SC and ST candidates get 5 years. For instance, if the general limit is 18–27 years, an OBC candidate may apply up to age 30 and an SC/ST candidate up to age 32. Extra relaxation is also available for persons with benchmark disabilities, ex-servicemen and departmental candidates, as specified in each notification. Note that OBC candidates in the creamy layer are treated as general category and do not get relaxation, and relaxations for different categories generally cannot be combined beyond the maximum permitted.

How to use this age calculator

Using the calculator is simple. Select your date of birth from the calendar picker and click Calculate Age. The tool instantly shows your exact age in years, months and days as on today, along with the total number of days you have lived. Compare this with the age limit and cut-off date in the official notification of the exam you want to apply for. The calculator works on mobiles and desktops, and it stores nothing — your date of birth never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Should I calculate my age as on today or the notification's cut-off date?

Recruiters count your age as on the cut-off date mentioned in the official notification, not the application date or the exam date. This calculator shows your age as on today, which is handy for planning; once a notification is out, compare your date of birth with its cut-off date to confirm eligibility.

Do OBC creamy layer candidates get age relaxation?

No. Only OBC candidates in the Non-Creamy Layer get the usual 3-year relaxation in the upper age limit. Candidates in the creamy layer are treated as general category for age limits.

Can I apply if I am over the age limit by just a few days?

No. If you cross the upper age limit even by a single day as on the cut-off date, your application will be rejected. There is no grace period, so always verify your exact age before applying.

Do different posts in the same exam have different age limits?

Yes. Exams such as SSC CGL and RRB NTPC prescribe different age limits for different posts — for example, RRB NTPC graduate posts allow up to 33 years while undergraduate posts cap at 30. Always check the post-wise limits in the notification.
